Day 6: Motherhood-the Hardest, “Bestest” Job

Day Six of 12 Days of Victory

Proverbs 23:24b-25
What a pleasure to have children who are wise.
So give your father and mother joy! May she who gave you birth be happy!

Today, we are looking at another group of people who need our prayers and our love and respect—and that is mothers. Moms wear a number of “hats” and sometimes literally so, as it is frequent that moms need to work outside the home to provide for the needs in the home.  Moms often work late into the night and if your child is anything like mine was, you are on call night and day. Moms work when they are healthy and when they are sick.  They wipe the dirt and blood from wounded knees, “kiss and make it all better” but there is no one to see or offer a kiss for the secret wounds in mom’s heart.  Her heartbreak is her own and often there is no one to bring it to but the Lord.

The most important role a mom plays in the lives of her children is that of a Prayer Warrior.  She is just beginning to understand that things are very different for her progeny than they were when she went to school and she must be a careful observer of these changes so she knows how to target her prayers.  She sees areas of weakness in the characters of her little ones and these observations will guide her as she prays. She prays while stirring the spaghetti. She prays while cleaning off the table.  She prays while they do homework.  She prays when she tucks them into bed and long after they have gone to sleep.

And there are times when mom’s heart breaks…and she has no one to share her pain except the Lord.  But she finds comfort and joy when little arms reach for her and she receives a messy kiss.

She often faces financial needs and struggles, especially if she is a single mom. She goes without things she needs so that she can meet the needs of her children. She finds comfort in the words of Scripture. And she finds comfort in the knowledge that she did the best she could and must leave it up to God to take care of the rest.

What can you do for these valiant warrior women?  Pray for them…send them a grocery store gift card…be a “grandma” or “uncle” to her little ones.  Remember their birthdays (especially mom’s) and send a card. Greet them when you see them and keep your ears open so you know how to pray for them.

And if you are a mom who needs encouragement, then make sure you have a good home church, one with programs for your kids.  Make friends there and speak to the pastor and his wife for your needs for prayer and help.  You have the hardest, lowest paying job in the world…but truly the most important one.

2 Timothy 1:4-5
I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.
